If average murky i tend to lean towards electric colors like charturse, pink, white, anything that will catch the eyes of a eager fish. Twin tails are great. There are even some grubs that you can push a rattler into. The rattlers are sold for other soft baits but work well. Color is one thing but if the water gets darker try some noise.

I find that the yellow and pumpkin colors work very well. Twin tails give me much better results also. I finesse the lure by reeling a little and letting it drop naturally, then repeating. The twin tails seem to attract the fish more by giving better visibility and motion.

Grubs probably aren't your best choice for muddy water. With little water displacement or much else in the way of noise to make its presents known they make a better sight bait in cleaner water. As for colors in dark water if you try it,,, I'd stick to those less translucent and dark. Solid black, junebug, maybe something with a fire-tail.

Tipically the skirted twintail grub on a jig head is a good replacement for bigger "power" jigs when you're looking for finesse. The "standup" style head (with or without weed guard depending on cover) in 1/4, 5/16 or 3/8oz on average work well fished around rocky cover in clear to stained water. Jigs like this tend to mimic crawdads so my main colors stick to greens and browns. (watermelons, green pumpkins, pumpkins) with red and or black flake. As a finesse bait I like to work it SLOWWWW along the bottom, don't be afraid to just let it sit.

All this being said, like most other soft plastics, its use is only limited by the fisherman. It makes a great trailer on many other baits (with or without the skirt). Its also great texas riged with a pegged worm weight, on a split shot or carolina rig.

If your fishing for smallmouth then white with a pink jig head reeled along the bottom, less is more. If largemouth salt and pepper, black head, bounced off the bottom.

I find that Watermelon Black/Gold is an excellent color for Bass. I bounce it afew times, then reel a little, then bounce again etc. The bass cannot seem to resits it. I have also picked up a few pickerel on it.

We catch alot of bass and breams with the darker grubs, usually a black, green or gray color.
Best in shallow waters or close to shady areas where you are fishing. Keep it moving, reeling it in slow and steady

Green pumpkin is the color that seems to work in the areas I fish, bottom bouncing is the best way I have found to fish these deadly little guys. I like to throw this grub into rip rap, weeds, and ledges.
