I installed the SE 300 with the clip on my Alpha 1 and the results so far have been good. For the record, using both is not an option! If you are comfortable drilling holes in your out drive, save $50 and forget the clip. For myself I chose the clip because of all the negative reviews from other hydrofoils and didn't want to take the chance. The foil works well avoiding cavitation (why I bought it) but really excels in improved steering and acceleration.
I have only been out once since the installation, but I pulled tubes and boarders all day along with a few top end bashes and the foil stayed on. I'm not sure of top end improvements, but I can get to my old top speed in short basins now as a result of the improved acceleration.

If you want to install it without drilling you need the sport clip. If you want to install it by drilling holes in your cavitation plate, you don't need it.
