this scope is really good in low light conditions. i used it late this afternoon and every thing was clear. and it's gonna be pushin it at 200 yards but if you're a good enough shot then yeah it's effective from that far.

MAGNIFICATION IS THE SAME, 50MM IS BETTER IN LOW LIGHT. UNLESS YOU HAVE A MONTE CARLO STYLE STOCK ON YOUR RIFLE TO MAINTAIN DEAD ON ANCHOR POINT AND ALIGNMENT I WOULD STICK WITH THE 40MM THOUGH.

The difference is 40 to 50 mm is the size of the bell on the end of the scope, It does not increase the magnification. Although a bigger size mm measurement does allow for more light transmission.

You can zero it at 100 yards if you want, you just have to learn where your bullets are going to hit based on the different drop levels...Each ammo is going to shoot different, and you will just have to shoot, and mark where each CIRCLE gets you.

Question
Beginner's Scope for 30-06?
Just starting to deer hunt...bought Ruger M77 30-06 and need good beginner's scope. Guy at local non-Bass Pro sporting goods store recommended this scope. Specifically concerned about eye relief and ease of use. Is this a good way to go, any other recommendations? Not looking for anything too fancy...thanks!

It is a good quality scope from a company that knows its optics. You can find scopes that are said to be designed for smaller calibers, like the .17 and .22 (I'm thinking of the Sweet scope line from BSA). Are they better? For some they are. For others, they see no difference or don't like them as much. Many hunters like to put scopes that are smaller than 3-9x40 on their .22s. You may want to go to your local Bass Pro or Pro gun shop and shoot a few rounds with a 3-9x40 on top and then a few rounds with a smaller scope to see what you think. Whatever size you decide you like, a Nikon is never a bad choice for optics!

NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN THE OLD RINGS SHOULD WORK FINE, BUT... THIS DEPENDS ON HOW HIGH YOUR OLD SCOPE SITS OFF THE BARREL, YOU MAY NEED TO BUY HIGHER RINGS, I DOUBT IT THOUGH.

Question
I use binoculars. Why buy a variable scope.
I bought a Nikon 4x40 thinking that variables leave more margin for error because of moving parts plus variables cost more for the same quality.
