answer 1
I like Buck, but it has a nylon sheath and I still like a leather one. The knife is great and holds a edge well. I have had the folding one and carry it on my belt for the past 10+ years. It holds an edge very well.

answer 2
case knives hold ther edge much longer. I happen to own a gen5 Buck skinner and a fixed blade case I prefer the case over the Buck 10 to 1.

Case knives and Buck knives both are outstanding in quality if you are looking for a working knife. Case knives are easier to sharpen, both hold a good edge, but the Buck knives are stubborn if you let them get dull before you resharpen. It comes down to personal choice. Depending on where you purchase both are close in price.
If you are looking for collector grade knives, then I believe your stronger choice would be the Case line.
