Looking for Answers about Gary Yamamoto Senko - 5''?

Simply find the middle of your bait, and stick the hook though it.

you can use a weedless hook or a texas rigging hook, and you bend the worm in half and hook it strait through the middle

Put a hook on the line, hook the senko in the middle and let her fly.

A wacky rig is using any hook, I recommend a red circle hook, and hook it through the center of the bait and shake it and let it drop.

PUT THE HOOK RIGHT IN THE MIDLLE SO BOTH ENDS FLUTTER

This is the best way to do it. take a 5/16" I.D. O ring and slide it to the center of the worm and put your hook under the ring but do not penetrate the worm. you will find that the worms will last longer than if you use a texas rig.

Almost all worms have a piece in the center of it (forget what the name of it's called), this piece is a little larger & smoother than the rest of the body. Insert the hook through this area. Try to not stick it all the way through rather have the hook just pop out a little. The worm will hang to either side of the hook & will float slowly down to the bottom. If you use a search engine like Google, type Wacky Rig. Then hit the images tab. This will bring up tons of images that should help you better understand how to rig each worm because there are slightly different methods.

Wacky style is when you insert the hook throught the middle portion of the worm instead of the head. It creates a lot of vibration on the fall. You can use a variety of hooks, including jig heads.

Get a 2/O or 3/O weedless hook and just put in through the middle of the worm so both ends hang down.

Take a regular worm hook and stick it through the middle and gently twitch it. It makes the bait move in a flappy way that fish like.

I typically use 4/0 or 5/0 EWG Gamakatsu or 4/0, 5/0 BPS Magna Superlock hooks.

I know people love Gamakatsu, however I prefer the BPS for cost, and they perform just as equally.

Plain shank 2/0. Anything smaller increases the chances of bass swallowing the hook. I always use an "o-ring" and there by increase the life of the Senko 10 to 15 times.

I use a Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG worm... You want the hook to go right through the little flat section of the bait. When you use anything much smaller you'll start tearing baits. On the other end of the spectrum too big of a hook will start to take away action from the bait.

With a 5" senko you can use just about any size hook, but I would stay in the 2/0-5/0 range for bass. I usually use a 3/0 extra wide gap worm hook. A 2/0 works well for 4". A 1 works well for 3". Larger hooks will dampen the action of the worm on the fall, so use the smallest you're comfortable with. That being said I've caught 4 lb+ bass on a size 1 hook, so you be the judge. Gamakatsu is a great brand for hooks, I highly recommend them.

I wouldn't use anything larger than a number 1 hook.

I use a size six hook.

they work the same go with the yum dinger and save some money

There both great, however the action for my style of fishing which is smallmouth in the rivers the Senko performs best with a faster fall rate mostly where bites are made by dragging and bumping the bottom made by the water current

The senko is better because it is the original whereas the dinger is an imitation of the senko. The senko has the best rate of fall in my opinion.

senko all the way, altho the yum scent is good the action out preforms, i would still suggest buying the yum spray scent and spraying these with it to catch more fish

They are both good baits. I think the Senko has slightly better action and the Dinger is slightly more durable. There are several videos out on the net which demonstrate this action (quivering and shaking on the weightless fall).

The Senko comes in significantly more colors.

I have not tried the YUM dinger, but I know that the senko catches bass like crazy, but they tear very easily. if you have the money to buy more, get the senko, but buy a pack of both and see which one you like, thats what i would do.

Senko, without a doubt. It has a better fall rate and the options for colors are better.

You are right on with your technique, but it's worh a try fast twitching them along the edges if the fish are running baitfish. I have good success with the Senkos' (and the far more durable YUM dinger worms) fishing them fast along the fall off of the shoreline when bass are cutting baitfish--let em sink for a few seconds, and then a semi-quick retrieve with some fast twitches along the fall off.

5" worm will fall at a rate of 1' a count. so 5' deep water count to 5. Leave yor line slack on the water and be a line whicher

changing colors can make a difference, depending on the angle you twitch your rod, if you twitch your rod downwards the senko will lift about 2inches off the bottom, to the side it will go up a bit more, and if you twitch it directley up it will take about 3-4 seconds to get back to the bottom, you can never go wrong with fishing the bottom

I use a red circle hook and hook it right through the center of the senko and shake it a few times and let it fall, this is called wacky rigging. try it, see how it works for you.

let it sit right on the bottom and twitch the tip after 60 seconds a couple of times before you retrieve it. BE patient. Many bass will look at it for a while before they take it. You can tell how they are feeding that day as to how quick they take it. some time you might want to leave it for a couple of minutes.

There are a couple ways to retrieve a soft stickbait such as this. The most common retrieve is one that involves you casting the lure out, letting it sink, and then raising your rod tip again. Keep it on a CONTROLLED slack line. Another way of retrieving this bait is to reel SLOWLY and twitch it. You can also wacky rig it (google it). With this rig, cast into small pockets of weeds and twitch it as you raise your rod tip. Let it fall and repeat. This looks like a dying/injured baitfish. With these retrieves, the bite will usually come on the fall so be ready to set the hook! You can also invent your own ways of retrieving the bait. Fishing it on a 1/0 or 2/0 will allow it to fall at a slower pace, thus attracting more fish. Good luck!

use 2/0 octopus hook. weightless and wacky rig. twitch your rod while there is slack. YES, while there is slack. this makes worm twitch without moving the worm. feel bite or see the line move, reel the slack and set your hook medium/medium hard strength since the hook is exposed.

that is the best way to fish it. I've caught MANY bass doing it that way when no one else is catching anything at all.

They way you're fishing them is fine, I catch a lot of fish that way. Be sure to move the senko with the rod, not the reel. You can twitch it in place before moving the bait too. If the fish aren't up shallow you can try adding a weight and casting deeper.

Either fish them texas rigged or use a weedless hook for wacky rigging.

Sure, just rig them weedless, pull the hook all the way through the worm, and then skin hook back into the body to keep it weedless, a straigh shank hook that rides closer to the body will help too.

You can wt them. My need up to 1 0z if the weeds are very thick. I like to look for pockets and use less wt.

Try fishing these weedless on a weighted hook from Bass Pro Shops. I can throw them anywhere and they'll slide through the weeds like a hot knife through butter

You can easily fish these in cover. It is in the heavy cover that I get the most strikes. Simply rig texas style with an offset hook (2/0 or 3/0 is good for a 5" senko) and instead of leaving the hook out, bury it slightly into the worm. This will make it so that it will not snag on weeds or wood. If you do not know how to texas rig a softbait, look it up on Google.

Through light to medium weed cover, like early summer hydrilla growth, I had pretty good luck with it. I just pushed the hook tip real slightly back into the senko after rigging to make it weedless. But because of the weight of it, I found heavy weed growth to be a challenge. You basically end up dragging weeds, and even a dumb fish knows bait doesn't drag weeds. However, if its simply heavy bottom cover weed growth, you dont necessarily need to fish them on the bottom, I have had great luck just letting rise and fall mid-water.

Pumpkin with flecks works well in any water condition.

In stained water, I've had great success with the colors:
#214 SMOKE with LARGE BLACK, BLUE and SMALL GOLD FLAKE

Also #157 SMOKE WITH LARGE BLACK AND PURPLE FLAKE

Red shad laminate is great in murky water and also at night or on cloudy days.

well i go to pineveiw reservoir in utah and the colors i use are Green/red and oxblood!

The best colors are matching the characterestics of your water environment. If you have really clear water, you want a color that mimics your lake/streambed environment. so if the rocks and bottom are greenish, go green, if they are blacker/bluer, go that color range. Picking a color to mimic baitfish is always a good option too, if you have little baitfish that are silver, try a color similar to them, and fish it just on the edge of where these baitfish will be, keep it towards the edges of the deeper water just away from the typical places you see such baitfish.

i would suggest using overall lighter colors or colors that resemble forage of the bass, such as the color with a light green on top and white on the bottom immitates an emerald shiner.

If the water is clear, try to go with natural subtle colors that somewhat match the forage fish. If there are minnows/shad, consider a laminate with green or smoke on top and white on the bottom. The natural (tan) and green colors work well in clear water as well!

Try to fish it weightless (T-rig or wacky) to exploit the full potential of the quivering/shaking Senko fall!

I like the watermelon and cream, natural, and pumpkinseed.

cant go wrong with Red Shad... it has a good blend of red and black and remeber with any worms that dark colors work best i.e black,june bug black grape.

I personally like to fish this bait weightless - Texas rigged.

My favorite set-up for this bait is a 7'5" carbonlite rod with a good quality baitcaster. Monofilament (15#) and a 3/0 or 4/0 Gammagatsu or Owner EWG hook. If you get your reel set up properly - you should be able to cast a mile as well as pitch into good spots!

I usually use a medium action baitcaster, but I have also used it extensively with an ultralight spinner. Basically if you can get the bait to land in the spot you were aiming for, you are good to go.

You can use any size rod, I use a 6' 6" m rod and sometimes I use my 4'6" ultralight rod, whatever you have works.

always use a spinning rod while worm fishing. i prefer medium action. berkley lightening rod is a good choice

Any rod can be used butI recomend the 7 foot black all star rods that are medium or fast action. I like their rods because they are super sensitive and strong.

7' im 6 spinning or 7' im 7 casting.
On the casting I use 20# firewire and on the spinning is 8# mono.

i use a 7' medium to medium light action for sensativity. I use falcon lowriders so I have great tip action and a firm back bone to set the hook

I mostly fish it wacky style on a 4/0 straight or octupus style hook... seems to tear more on an offset style worm hook

SnookKing98, the Senko's just aren't durable, that is the big knock on them. Maybe the softness is one of the reasons why fish love em so much though...your hook size won't matter much on their durability I hate to tell you.

On the color for the red stained water we get here, it sounds backwards, but using something in the redder browner tones usually works best--the other color I have found that works in that kind of water is a blue/black color range, something about the contrast that makes em easy for a fish to spot IMO.

I've experienced the same thing. Yamamoto's aren't very durable. I switched to Bass Pro Tournaments and they are a little more rugged and worked better IMO (maybe because of the strong anise). I would use a 4/0 in red.

4/0 gamakatsu g-lock hooks worms best for me

The Senkos tear, they are delicate because this soft plastic causes the bait to quiver and shake on the fall - this triggers bass strikes. Using a good hook (Owner or Gamagatsu) that has a nice smooth finish, will allow the bait to slide on the hook and minimize tearing when rigging.

If you are fishing in stained water, darker colors will probably give a better visual profile for the fish. Consider some of the black or smoke black with gold flake.

i also use the senkos i do well with bubblegum color in stained water try fishing them wacky style with a circle weedless hook. size i use is a 2 . however when getting hits the rip is sometimes uncontrolled.

Use a bead. Find a small light bead and put it on your line before you attach the hook. This will keep the line from tearing your worm. As far as the hook goes, you'll have to get some glue. I use a 3/0 or 2/0 and I haven't seen a difference in tearing. It really depends on the size of fish that strikes it and how hard it strikes. Otherwise, these baits are not durable at all. They don't last long and tearing is just part of fishing these baits. As far as color goes, I recommend green with a chartreuse tail or black in stained water. Good luck.

All colors work but some are better suited for different amounts of sunlight. However, from our experience, the colors closest to red, brown and yellow seem to stand out.

I would go with watermelon or watermelon w/ black flakes.

This really depends on the lake. Clearlake, CA does excellent with red/blk. Hyatt Lake, OR seems to handle the pumpkin/purple nicely. And I've used both on a couple of other lakes.

Experiment a bit with the colors that look like a primary food source on your lakes.

Any color will work and long as it is GREEN! Green as in Watermelon, Pumkin or Baby bass. You can't go wrong with GREEN. It is good year around, especially in the spring to early summer. When the weather is HOT and the surface temp it above 80 degree's I use the Junebug color, they will rip it, good luck.
