answer 1
The felt sole provides more traction when walking on slippery, moss covered, or quicker flowing streams. The lug sole is just like a regular shoe. I prefer the felt sole for everything because after wading, you have to walk back and I don't want to trip, plus with the felt, I don't really have to worry about slipping anywhere.

answer 2
Personal preference. Different people feel the different soles give them better traction while fishing in the water. Generally, lug bottoms work better in silty or muddy bottoms (like ponds) and felt bottoms work better on gravel bottoms (like trout streams and rivers). However, not all fishermen agree.
