Questions & Answers for Bass Pro Shops Bass Pro Shops® Prowler® T30/30 Trolling Motor

Question

Is 30lbs thrust enough?

Can I buy a steering arm to attach to my 20hp Evenrude outboard?
I have a 14ft fiberglass boat with a stearn drive 20hp. I have room to clamp a trolling motor beside my outboard. Is 30 lbs enough thrust to control the boat in your average all day fish?

It depends on how windy it is. For calm days this would be fine, but on those really windy days you will be wishing you went with a 45 pound or higher thrust motor.

Yes, the unit includes red and black alligator clips that are attached to the ends of the main power cable. Attach them to a battery, not an actual alligator. : )

Can I use this trolling motor in salt water ?

They do have special trolling motors for salt water. So, I don't think that you're supposed to. However, my buddy bought one and used it in the bay on an inflatable and it worked great until he popped the boat. He rinsed it by running it in fresh water after each use.

The motor is mine now and is still working great with no signs of corrosion or damage. I use it only in freshwater now and it runs great. These things are built tough and run strong. I use it on a 12' row boat with two big guys in it and it moves much faster than I could row. I'd buy another one if this one ever dies.

answer 2
Just because the motor is waterproof does not mean that the motor seals will be able to stand up to the saltwater in the long-term. Depending on how the unit is treated and taken care of the "corrosion-resistant" shaft will probably start to rust with saltwater use and you'll definitely need to clamp on a sacrificial anode. Depending on where you live, if the electronics aren't properly coated in the head they'll corrode within a couple years and then you've got a $100 shed ornament. If you're looking for a trolling motor that you want to last a long time and use in saltwater, get one that was designed for saltwater use.

answer 3
Of course you can, it is waterproof. You would have to take extra steps to maintain it however. Wash it down with fresh water after each use. Use a salt spray remover like the ones they sell in the bass pro catalog for boats. Keep the Cable ends lubricated. At only a hundred dollars what do you have to lose?

this motor should be excellent for a canoe. it's light weight and the length should be just right. the shaft is adjustable to where you want to posistion the motor in the water. the best thing is the weight, great for a canoe. it won't add too much extra weight.

While you can use a regular 12-volt auto battery, you would get better performance from a marine deep-cycle battery. You will also need a charger.
