As of 10/10/2008, left hand versions are now available. Check online. I own two right hand versions, and with the exception of the pointy star drags, I really like them. Check out my review.

Question
Which Ratio should I use for flipping tubes?
I will be doing a lot of tube flipping and smaller crank baits on float trips and I was wondering which ratio to purchase. I read where you can slow a reel down easier than speed one up should I just buy the highest? Also this will be my first baitcaster.

I only buy the middle range of 6.3:1 or around there because it is all purpose. You can slow it down, or you just reel really fast to burn a spinnerbait back. It works well. I hope this helps you. Plus, I have never had a backlash with this baitcaster yet, so you should be good to go since it is your first baitcaster. Just remember to set the magnetic spool brake higher until you get good. GOOD FISHING!!

answer 2
I would suggest going in the middle ground primarily because it is your first baitcaster. It is true that it is easy to slow down your retrieval but one drawback to faster ratio reels is they usually have less drag power and that can make it tougher to drag the big ones out of cover. After you get used to using one you can see if you want to move up to a higher ratio..

If you want to keep with the flourocarbon I would say Seaguar invizx probably 15lb depending on application. However if you want a mono I would suggest Berkley Maxx I use it often and it performs well.

the flipping switch is engaged when you slide the small silver piece on the right side of th reel to the F. this causes the thumb bar to come back up without turning the handle.

I'd use your 5.1 with the ml for topwater, or light crankbaits. the other setup for crankbaits or larger topwater. the problem is line. i use a KVD with a 6'6"ml crankin stick myself but use braid with a florocarbon leader. soft rod, strong line. there's way to much stretch if mono was used in this setup. you can do the same thing with the heavier setup. just extend the length of leader. better to keep the higher gear ratio for the crankbaits. you won't get so worn out. consider a 7.1-1 ratio next time. you can always slow a fast reel down; but you can't speed a slow one up.

With those reels, you can throw about anything on the medium rod, except for maybe big swimbaits. I throw all crankbaits (lipless and lipped) on a medium rod, as well as spinnerbaits and sometimes even Senko-style soft plastics (weightless). However, I find the Crankin' Stick Medium to be more like a Medium-Heavy rod, so I use it for topwater frogs and throwing jigs, and even Texas rigs, and I love it for those applications. As far as the medium lite rod goes, I don't use any rods of that action, so I can't give any insight into that rod. I feel that they are too soft and can't get a great hookset or leverage the fish at all. Sorry!

I really haven't tried the carrot sticks myself, but i have heard from a few people mainly friends that have tried it, said it was a very good and reliable rod to get. I know its not that much info but i hope it helps you on your decision to get a carrot stick rod.
