Hi, Length and weight depend of the type of fish that you want to catch and your fishing style. Typically, the bigger the fish, the longer the cast so the longer the rod.
General for offshore/inshore rods you will want to look for a 7 to 8 feet long rod. For surf fishing these rods are from 9 to 12 or 14 feet in length.
Longer rods give you more leverage, and they also bend more which tempers the battle a lot, taking some of the stress off of your line. More leverage is definitely an advantage for any job, especially when you're up against a heavyweight. Longer rods are also a little easier on your back because you're fishing further out and up, instead of straight down.
